top 10 influential books!

tagged by larysa on facebook. given my penchant for tumblr, here i shall post :) the top 10 books that have most influenced me.

in no particular order

searching for god knows whatdonald miller
really hit home for me when i was searching for answers in college. it has a strong christian theme, but there’s so much more. the amount of wisdom and keen perception about everyday struggles and the depth of our depravity was honest and raw. this guy can write.

a tree grows in brooklynbetty smith
one of my favorite novels of all time. the way betty smith portrays francie’s love for her father is incredibly layered, magical, and fiercely beautiful. not going to spoil too much, but the part where she receives flowers from him near the end tears me up every time.

the glass castlejeannette walls
god bless jeannette walls. i love all her books. this one echoes brooklyn, from which i believe she drew inspiration. really forces you to reevaluate your relationship with your family.

the secret life of beessue monk kidd
this story is a bit fantastical but i love it. lily’s courage is inspiring, and the emotional moments are bittersweet yet empowering. my go-to book every time i want to escape.

into the heart: one man’s pursuit of love and knowledge among the yanomamikenneth good
this is a stand out one. we read it in my pseudo-anthro english class. kenneth good writes about his experiences working as an anthropologist with the yanomami tribe and pretty much falls in love with their culture, which is so, so un-american and un-any other people i’ve learned about. his book takes a personal turn very early on, and you’re drawn in right with him. it thrives on love and acceptance, almost to the point of corniness.

memories of summerruth white
i read this book in middle school and was drawn back to it time and time again. really and truly the first book that opened my eyes to mental illness, and i’ve since cultivated a strong interest in psychopathology books and memoirs (terri cheney and augusten burroughs are my favorite writers). my dream throughout the rest of middle school and part of high school was to work in a mental hospital, until i finally admitted to myself that i would never be emotionally strong enough to handle it.

shopaholic series, sophie kinsella
what can i say? gossip girl was my addiction in middle and high school, and after years of searching, these became my new guilty pleasure. i own three random books from the series. though i may have watched the movie more times than i’ve read all the books combined, i hope she writes more.

this lullabysarah dessen
every teenage girl probably knows and loves sarah dessen. the first one i ever read by her was keeping the moon in eighth grade, which then led me here. i probably read this book about fifty times (yes i own it). it gave me a bit too idealistic of a view on relationships.

the helpkathryn stockett
as much as i complain about the overhype, i have to say i’m a sucker for these types of books. i especially love celia foote. she inspired me to be a better cook. ironic isn’t it. or maybe not.

walk two moonssharon creech
sharon creech is slightly strange, which is why i love this charming and slightly twisted novel. a favorite since fifth grade, which is when i bought it at my scholastic book fair. by the time i bought it, i had already borrowed it three times from the library. explores deep themes about family well beyond its targeted age group, which is why i learned so much as i read it over and over through my adolescent years.

CS6

So I finally asked our tech director to install Adobe CS6 on my computer this week. I don’t know what the hold up was. I guess I didn’t think he could make it happen. But he did, and you guys have NO idea how excited I am. No more plain jane Microsoft programs to contend with. I am totally geeking out. I still had other work to do this week, but with every spare moment, I poured over the many familiar and wonderful features and clicked on the little icons and created many silly things. My new boss is in the middle of planning a party for our admin team, and she asked me to design a logo for it. I’m laughing because neither our positions respectively call for party planning or graphic design, but here we are with our fortes, so this is amazing, and I’m so, so excited, I feel like a little girl who has received an entire collection of brand new Zoobles.

Good Enough

the first song i’ve written in years. recorded on audacity, very unrefined, simple chords. just needed to lay it out.

lyrics:

Five thousand faces
The crowd I’m always in
Looking for chances
To make an indent

They’re hard to come by
They leave before you know

You told me I could climb
All the way up
All the way up
You said I was strong
Yet I’m still here on the bottom rung
When will I be good enough
Good enough
When will I be good enough
Good enough

I’m partially to blame
For the choices I’ve made
But I grew up getting taught
Chances come every day

So I pick myself up
Go all in again

You told me I could climb
All the way up
All the way up
You said I was strong
Yet I’m still here on the bottom rung
When will I be good enough
Good enough
When will I be good enough
Good enough

I tell myself after this run
If I don’t get in I’m done, I’m done
But I know better
Don’t I know any better

You told me I could climb
All the way up
All the way up
You said I was strong
Yet I’m still here on the bottom rung
When will I be good enough
Good enough good enough
When will I be good enough
Good enough
